Altogether, more than 200 people took part in six days of the “Collaborative January Sessions” including Auroville residents, members of Auroville’s key working groups and local projects, and a few regional network partners. The main objective of the project was to support L’Avenir/TDC planning office in planning for Auroville’s future growth.
The collaborative “January Sessions 2019” were organized to enable the inhabitants and participants not only to express their concerns, but also their hopes and dreams and to collaboratively develop ideas and concrete steps for “a way forward!”. Inspiring presentations from the visiting team members and their skilled guidance in all “hands-on” group sessions helped define a strategy for a future process of participatory planning, which could help to unblock individual and collective potential. The process could also help create a more appropriate governance structure and, most importantly, build consensus on an urgently needed and commonly agreed and supported Auroville masterplan. A broadsheet summarises the key results and recommendations regarding key themes, good governance, widening participation, healthy placemaking, water & green and holistic town-planning.
The January sessions in 2019 were building on another Auroville workshop in 2009 which focussed on “Sustainable Regions – Collaborative Planning”, with the participation of planners and officials from Puducherry, Chennai, Auroville, Goa, Bangalore, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and stakeholders from the region.

Insgesamt nahmen in sechs Tagen mehr als 200 Personen an den “Collaborative January Sessions” teil, darunter vor allem Aurovilianer, Mitglieder der wichtigsten Arbeitsgruppen und lokalen Projekte von Auroville sowie einige regionale Netzwerkpartner. Das Hauptziel des Projekts war es, das Planungsbüro L’Avenir/TDC Town Development Council bei der Planung der weiteren Verwirklichung von Auroville zu unterstützen.
Die “Januar Sessions 2019” sollten Teilnehmer ermöglichen, ihre Anliegen und Sorgen, aber auch ihre Hoffnungen und Träume auszudrücken um gemeinsam Ideen und konkrete Schritte für “einen Weg nach vorne” zu entwickeln. Inspirierende Präsentationen der Mitglieder des auswärtigen Teams und ihre kompetente Führung in allen “hands-on”-Gruppensitzungen halfen, eine Strategie für einen zukünftigen Prozess der partizipativen Planung zu entwickeln mit dem Ziel, individuelle und kollektive Potenziale zu erschließen. Der Prozess sollte auch einen Beitrag dazu liefern, eine verbesserte Governance-Struktur in Auroville zu schaffen und vor allem einen Konsens über einen dringend benötigten und gemeinsam zu vereinbarenden Auroville-Masterplan zu erzielen. Ein Faltblatt fasst die wichtigsten Ergebnisse und Empfehlungen zu den Schlüsselthemen Good Governance, Ausweitung der Beteiligung, Placemaking, Wasser und Grün sowie Ganzheitliche Stadtplanung zusammen.
Die „January Sessions 2019“ bauten auf einem früheren Workshop in Auroville im Jahr 2009 auf, der sich mit dem Thema “Nachhaltige Regionen – Kooperative Planung” beschäftigte, an dem Planer und Vertreter aus Puducherry, Chennai, Auroville, Goa, Bangalore, Delhi, Tamil Nadu und Interessengruppen aus der Region teilgenommen hatten.
