leonberg – city for tomorrow (D)

Great urban planning ideas meet realities in Leonberg that are sorely in need of it!  Jonas Pirzer, head of cultural affairs, City of Leonberg

“Leonberg is a car city” is something you can often hear locally. In the past, motorway-like roads have been laid through the town centre. There is a lack of quality of stay and social meeting spaces in the centre. This is to change. More green, shaded and water areas are to be created to protect against overheating. The central approach for an environmentally sound conversion of the city centre is the reduction of car traffic and instead the promotion of public transport, cycling and pedestrian traffic. The aim of the “Leonberg: City of Tomorrow” project is to provide for integrated urban development and innovative mobility planning. This will reduce environmental pollution by grasping the opportunities that urban integration and short distances in mixed-use urban spaces can provide.

In order to achieve this turnaround, many investments and a lot of staying power are needed. It is not only a matter of investments and decisions on the part of the city. The participation of many actors from the business community and the citizenry as a whole is essential. That is why the project “Leonberg – City for Tomorrow” is based on a broad-based participation strategy that aims to reach a wide range of interest groups and bring together a multitude of topics in an integrated inner city planning.

A COMPLEX PROCESS

The process of creating an integrated plan for the city centre of Leonberg began with a first public Perspektivenwerkstatt in September 2022.. Participation will continue in 2023 with further events in various formats. These include e.g.

Stadtplanerisch große Ideen treffen auf Realitäten in Leonberg, die das bitter nötig haben! Jonas Pirzer, Kulturamtsleiter Stadt Leonberg

“Leonberg ist eine Autostadt” so kann man es vor Ort oft hören. In der Vergangenheit sind durch die Stadtmitte autobahnähnliche Straßen gelegt worden. Es fehlt im Zentrum an Aufenthaltsqualität und sozialen Begegnungsräumen. Das soll sich ändern. Zum Schutz vor Überhitzung sollen mehr Grün-, Schatten- und Wasserflächen entstehen. Zentraler Ansatz für einen umweltgerechten Umbau der Innenstadt ist die Reduktion des Autoverkehrs und die Förderung von ÖPNV, Fahrrad und Fußgängerverkehr. Mit Hilfe des Projekts „Leonberg – Stadt von Morgen“ soll eine integrierte Stadtentwicklung und Mobilitätsplanung gelingen, welche nicht nur die Umweltbelastungen erheblich senkt, sondern auch die Chancen ergreift, die urbanes Zusammenleben und kurze Wege in multifunktional gemischten Stadträumen bieten.

Um diese Zeitenwende zu schaffen, sind viele Investitionen und ein langer Atem nötig. Dabei geht es nicht nur um Investitionen und Entscheidungen von städtischer Seite. Wesentlich ist die Mitwirkung vieler Akteure aus der Wirtschaft und der Bürgerschaft insgesamt. Deshalb basiert das Projekt “Leonberg – Stadt für Morgen” eine breit angelegte Partizipationsstrategie, die verschiedenste Interessengruppen erreichen und eine Vielzahl an Themen zu einer integrierten Innenstadtplanung zusammenführen will.

KOMPLEXER BETEILIGUNGSPROZESS

Mit einer ersten öffentlichen Perspektivenwerkstatt im September 2022 begann das Verfahren zur Erstellung einer integrierten Planung für die Innenstadt von Leonberg. Die Beteiligung wird im Jahr 2023 mit weiteren Veranstaltungen in verschiedenen Formaten fortgeführt. Dazu gehören z.B.
